Where is it?
Kaszon is situated in the north-eastern part of Romania which is called Transylvania.
Many Hungarian speakers live in Transylvania.
Kaszon village is found in the Kaszon valley (named after the river Kaszon). There are 5 villages, of which 3 are now grown together. The other two villages are situated a little distance away.

Population
The population of Kaszon as a whole is 3200.
In 1940 a register of the population of Kaszon was made; there were then more than 8000 inhabitants.
The present population is an ageing one. 34% (roughly 1000 people) are over 60.
In that area, nearly everyone speaks Hungarian and there are many people that cannot speak Romanian. Most people call themselves Transylvanian-Hungarians, although there are Hungarian mother tongue Romanians (150 people) and Hungarian gypsies (300 people) also living there.
The vast majority of inhabitants there are Roman-Catholic, though the Romanians are Orthodox.

Nature
There are many large forests in the valley of Kaszon; nearly half of the area of Kaszon is covered by forests.
Much of the rest of the area is used for growing crops and for grazing animals.
The Kaszon region is rich in mineral water springs.
In the past there was a spa there. The iodine content of the water made this spa a popular healing centre for iodine defficiencies.
